What should be noted when matching wheels and tires

The matching of wheels and tires is a key factor in ensuring vehicle performance, safety, and comfort. The following are important things to pay attention to when matching wheels and tires:
       1、 Size matching
The diameter of the wheel hub is consistent with the tire specification: The "17" in the tire specification label (such as 225/55 R17) indicates that the wheel hub diameter is 17 inches and must match the diameter of the wheel hub. If the diameter of the wheel hub does not match the tire, it can lead to installation difficulties and even affect the driving safety of the vehicle.
Tire width and wheel hub width adaptation: The tire width and wheel hub width need to be matched to ensure that the tire can deploy correctly and provide good grip and handling. For example, a 6J wheel hub is suitable for tires that are 185mm wide, and can accommodate tires that are 195mm wide.
Consideration of Flatness Ratio: Flatness ratio (the percentage of tire height to width) can affect the handling and comfort of the vehicle. A smaller flatness ratio (such as 40%) means shorter tire sidewalls and better handling, but comfort may decrease; A larger flatness ratio (such as 65%) provides better comfort, but slightly weaker handling. For example, the 205/55R16 tire has a flatness ratio of 55% and is compatible with a wheel hub width of 6.5J.
2、 Load index and speed level
Load index: Refers to the large weight that a tire can withstand under normal inflation conditions, and must meet the design requirements of the vehicle. If the load index is too low, it may cause tire malfunctions during use, affecting driving safety.
Speed level: represents the high speed that the tires can withstand. If the vehicle frequently travels at high speeds, it is necessary to choose tires with higher speed levels.

       3、 Wheel hub parameters
Offset (OFFSET/ET): Offset refers to the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel hub to the center of the wheel hub, which affects the position of the wheel. A suitable offset can avoid interference between the tire and other components of the vehicle. If the offset is not appropriate, it may lead to uneven tire wear and reduced vehicle handling.
Hole spacing (PCD): Hole spacing refers to the distance between the holes for fixing screws on the wheel hub, which must match the installation position of the vehicle's wheel hub.
Center Hole Diameter (CBD): The diameter of the center hole is the size of the hub center hole, which varies among different vehicle models. If the center hole of the upgraded wheel is too large, a center hole collar should be used to prevent shaking during high-speed driving.
       4、 Tire type and pattern
Tire type: Choose the appropriate tire type based on the vehicle's usage environment and needs, such as summer tires, winter tires, or all season tires.
Pattern depth: Pattern depth affects the grip and drainage performance of tires. If you frequently drive on wet and slippery roads, you should choose tire patterns with good drainage performance.
       5、 Other precautions
Tire dynamic balance: After replacing the tire, it is necessary to adjust the tire dynamic balance to ensure smooth driving of the vehicle.
Tire specifications: When installing non original tires, the production date should be displayed facing outward, and the directional tire arrow should be consistent with the vehicle's forward direction.
Pressure management: When installing tires, first inflate them to the maximum allowable pressure and then reduce them to the standard pressure to ensure that the tires work at the appropriate pressure.
Installation environment and tools: Install the wheel hub in a clean environment to avoid impurities from entering. Use the correct tools, such as applying torque evenly in diagonal order multiple times.
In short, the matching of wheels and tires is a comprehensive process that requires consideration of multiple aspects such as size, load index, speed level, wheel parameters, and tire type. Only by matching correctly can the safety, handling, and comfort of the vehicle be ensured, and the service life of the tires and wheels be extended.
